environmental problems in russia
Air pollution from heavy industry, emissions from coal-fired power plants, and transportation in big cities; industrial, urban and agricultural pollution in inland waters and sea coasts, deforestation, avalanche, soil contamination from inappropriate use of agrochemicals, scattered areas with sometimes intense radioactive contamination, contamination of groundwater from toxic waste, considerable biodiversity is addressed by the country's Biodiversity Action Plan.
Although Russia has abundant mineral and energy wealth, this is not bad for Russia and the larger world. In particular, the extraction of oil and gas has enormous costs for the health of the soil and society.
Drilling for wastewater, mud and accumulated sludge, the annual volume is estimated at 1.7 million tonnes of chemical reagent which contaminated 25 million cubic meters of topsoil.
Substantial geomechanical disturbances, contamination of soil and water, and the repeated increase in contaminated wastewater discharged into surface waterways, are serious problems that offset Russia's advantages from this industry.
It is estimated that between 1991-1999 the volume of polluted wastewater from the Russian oil industry reached 200 million cubic meters.
The complete utilization of the co-extracted gas in oil extraction does not exceed 80% in Russia,it is estimated that every year 5-17 billion cubic meters of unused gas which is extracted with oil is burned in "gas torches", with 400,000 tonnes or more of hazardous substances released into the atmosphere each year, create multiple impacts from wasted resources and negative environmental effects.
560 million tonnes of methane are estimated to leak into the atmosphere each year from oil and gas extraction, excluding accidental bursts and pipeline damage.
141 019100 tonnes of hazardous waste generated in Russia in 2009.
Other valuable industries also have their costs, such as the release of large quantities of hazardous, toxic and radioactive materials by the coal industry. Also the Russian gold industry, with Russia being the only country for at least a century with high extraction of gold from placer deposits, and having 4000+ large deposits, is bound to create problems for the river system.
The associated pollution from using mass explosions in mining can also be a problem.
Overall, the wealth and abundant mineral wealth, bringing with it great benefits for the Russian economy & people, and the bigger world and everyone, but also some difficult problems to deal with.
